Academic Division Director and Clinical Section Chief, Dermatology

 

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Dermatology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a Division Director and Section Chief, Dermatology. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty, part of the College of Health Sciences has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff. 

 

The Division of Dermatology at the University of Alberta is a leading center for clinical care, education, and research in skin diseases. The division is home to four staff dermatologists, community clinical academic dermatologists and a highly regarded Royal College accredited residency program, training 10-12 residents at any given time. It is distinguished by its multidisciplinary clinics, where dermatologists work alongside specialists in oncology, rheumatology, immunology, and plastic surgery to provide comprehensive care for complex conditions such as cutaneous lymphoma, autoimmune skin diseases, contact dermatitis, melanoma, and psychodermatology. Research is a key focus, with ongoing studies in immune-dermatology and cutaneous oncology, fostering innovation in diagnostics and treatment. Through cutting-edge clinical programs, collaborative research, and a strong commitment to medical education, the division continues to advance the field of dermatology.

 

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with eligible certification in Dermatology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The ideal candidate will have research experience and/or medical education scholarship.  

Key accountabilities of the Division Director/Section Chief will include, but will not be limited to, providing strategic leadership to advance the division’s clinical, research, and educational missions. This includes ensuring excellence in patient care, supporting multidisciplinary clinics, and fostering collaborations to enhance dermatologic services. The Director will work closely with the Residency Program Director to create a strong learning environment, encourage faculty involvement in teaching, and support continuing medical education. Advancing the division’s research portfolio will be a key focus, including facilitating funding opportunities, promoting academic productivity, and supporting faculty in achieving high-impact publications. The Director is also expected to successfully compete for research funding and maintain an active, independent research program that contributes to the division’s academic strength. The Section Chief provides clinical leadership for Dermatology in the Edmonton Zone and is responsible for assuring Dermatology clinical services are delivered in a safe, efficient and effective setting with AHS facilities.  The role involves faculty mentorship, guiding recruitment efforts, and building partnerships within the university, healthcare system, and broader dermatology community to strengthen the division’s academic and clinical impact.

 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured appointment in the Department of Medicine, with the rank of Associate or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.  

 

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine Health Services Program (AMHSP), and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
