Job Summary:
AHS Medical Affairs is looking for up to ten (10) physician mentors to support International Medical Graduates (IMGs) during a new, innovative program called SMART.
The Sustainable, Multi-Collaborator Approach from Arrival to Readiness for Practice and Transition (SMART) Initiative is a demonstration project that helps Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) successfully integrate into Alberta’s healthcare system. The Internationally Medical Graduates (IMGs) program consists of 5-weeks of structured learning and practice preparation followed by six months of ongoing mentorship. The program is designed to support IMGs workplace readiness by building confidence, providing access to learning resources and developing key competencies required for practice, including the competencies of Medical Expert, Professional, Communicator, and Collaborator.
The AHS SMART Physician Mentor will be matched with up to two SMART IMG participants. They will provide online support through scheduled and ad hoc meetings. Mentors will be responsible for the non-clinical support to their assigned SMART participants, and required to complete progress tracking for their mentees.
Scope:
Each SMART mentor will support up to two SMART IMGs.
Up to 50 Hours in total over six months starting October- March 2026.
The position will be accountable to the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Medical Staff Workforce, Academic Medicine & Strategic Partnerships.
Requirements:
SMART Mentors must be a current and active member of the AHS Medical Staff.
Completion of a bespoke online learning program (Up to 20 hours, paid at the hourly rate).
Prior preceptor/educator role is preferred.
Support:
The SMART Initiative offers a structured learning pathway to equip Mentors/Preceptors with tools, methodologies, use-cases in order to assist them to better support the IMGs as they integrate in the health system.
