Job Description

Location - This role is in-person at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the University of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Corridor, Women's Health, is inviting applications for an Academic Medicine and Health Service Program (AMHSP) Academic Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist position. 

 

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a Centre of Excellence in education, research and clinical care in women's health. The department has five academic divisions, 19 full-time academic faculty members, and over 100 clinical academic colleagues in general obstetrics and gynecology. Our faculty members encompass the full range of academic medicine including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, Gynecological Oncology, Reproductive Sciences and Urogynecology.

 

As part of the new Obstetrics and Gynecology AMHSP and support of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspeciality residency program, we are recruiting a clinician scientist/clinician researcher to support the academic mission.

 

The successful candidate will have a strong research interest in basic science research or clinical research to support the Maternal-Fetal Medicine group at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, as well as the academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Scholarly activity is a core part of residency training, and this position will support student and resident research.

 

To support research start-up costs, the incumbent will be provided with research start-up funding, provided in partnership between the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI). This funding will be available to support the launch of a sustainable research program focused on Maternal Fetal Medicine.

 

About WCHRI

The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) supports researchers within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services. With a focus on advancing women’s, children’s, and perinatal health, WCHRI provides extensive resources for faculty conducting research in these areas.
As a member of WCHRI, the successful candidate will have access to funding opportunities, biostatistical expertise, qualitative design support, knowledge translation resources, and clinical trials services. WCHRI also invests in research development by supporting trainees through scholarships, fellowships, and travel grants for presenting research outcomes.

 

Responsibilities

  • The candidate selected for this position will be referred to the AMHSP Arrangement Management Committee to finalize their yearly individual service agreement, which the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services jointly approve. 
  • Education and Mentorship: Teach and mentor learners at all levels of clinical and academic settings.
  • Research Contribution: Conduct impactful research in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Perinatal Health and engage with the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI)

 

Qualifications

  • Candidates for this position must have completed accredited Maternal-Fetal Medicine training
  • Candidates for this position must have completed a PhD (completion of a Master's in Research may be considered)
  • Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist and a Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialist and must have or be eligible for unrestricted licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The position will allow up to 0.5 FTE for research; the remaining FTE will be clinical services with AHS.
  • Preference will be given to physicians with previous experience as a clinician scientist or clinician researcher

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). Further details about this innovative funding plan are available on request.

 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
