Primary Care Alberta (PCA) is seeking an experienced and collaborative physician leader to join the Office of the Chief Medical Officer as Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO). This provincial leadership role provides strategic and operational medical leadership in support of PCA's priorities and works closely with the Chief Medical Officer, medical leaders, operational leaders and partners across Alberta's health system.
The ACMO will contribute to portfolio planning and provide medical leadership for assigned programs and services. Key areas of responsibility include clinical operations, physician workforce planning, recruitment and retention, quality improvement, change management, and the development of best practices and standards of practice. The ACMO will also support the investigation and resolution of issues involving individual physicians and teams and help ensure appropriate physician coverage for clinical operations.
Relationship-building and physician engagement are central to this role. The ACMO will act as a physician liaison, developing strong collaborative relationships with PCA staff and medical leaders, Alberta Health Services, other Provincial Health Agencies, Primary Care Networks/Primary Care Corridors and other clinical partners. The position will also engage with external partners including Faculties of Medicine and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta as required.
As a senior medical leader within PCA, the ACMO will lead and support the orientation, development and education of medical leaders; participate in and, where appropriate, lead committees, working groups and governance or operational forums; and support medical leadership responsibilities under applicable Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules.
This role offers an opportunity to help shape provincial medical leadership and contribute to the continued development of an integrated, collaborative and high-performing primary care system for Albertans.
The successful candidate will be eligible for independent medical licensure in Alberta, including certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or an equivalent professional body. The successful candidate will also be expected to obtain and maintain an appropriate Medical Staff appointment. These requirements are consistent with the qualifications established for the previous ACMO role.
The ideal candidate will bring progressive medical leadership experience within a complex healthcare environment and a demonstrated record of achievement in strategic planning, operational leadership and change management. They will have experience working collaboratively with physicians, medical and operational leaders and multidisciplinary partners, with the ability to navigate complex issues, develop innovative solutions and translate organizational priorities into action.
Exceptional communication, consultation, facilitation and negotiation skills are essential. The successful candidate will be skilled at building relationships, fostering partnerships, navigating differing perspectives and building consensus across organizational and system boundaries. They will demonstrate sound judgment, a commitment to quality improvement and an ability to lead effectively within a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment.
Preferred qualifications include:
Four or more years of progressive medical leadership experience in healthcare.
Experience in a senior medical leadership role within a complex, multi-program and/or geographically dispersed health system.
Experience leading or supporting quality and healthcare improvement programs or initiatives.
Experience designing, developing, implementing and evaluating healthcare policies, programs, tools and strategies in collaboration with provincial health system partners.
Additional education or formal training in medical leadership, health administration or quality improvement is considered an asset. Achievement of the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential is also an asset, consistent with the previous ACMO recruitment profile.
