Clinical Quality and Education Lead

The Clinical Quality and Education Lead is a key physician leadership role within Assisted Living Alberta responsible for advancing clinical quality, patient safety, physician development, and evidence-informed practice across the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer and working collaboratively with the Planning Performance and Quality (PPQ) Executive lead, the Clinical Quality and Education Lead will provide strategic and operational leadership for quality improvement, professional education, clinical excellence, and system performance initiatives that support Assisted Living Alberta’s mission and strategic priorities.
 
The role is instrumental in developing high-performing clinical teams and ensuring that care delivery is guided by best available evidence, regulatory requirements, and organizational values.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Clinical Quality and Patient Safety
 

• Provide leadership for quality improvement and patient safety initiatives across Assisted Living Alberta.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to improve clinical outcomes, patient experiences, and system performance.
• Monitor and analyze key quality indicators, including falls, medication incidents, infections, pressure injuries, hospital transfers, and other measures of safety and quality.
• Lead clinical audits, reviews, and quality assessments to identify opportunities for improvement.
• In collaboration with PPQ support organizational accreditation activities and ensure compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
• Develop and maintain clinical policies, standards, and best-practice guidelines in collaboration with operational and medical leaders.
• Lead or support root cause analyses, quality reviews, and improvement plans following adverse events and patient safety incidents.

• Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement, transparency, accountability, and learning.

   

   

   

Physician Engagement, Wellness, and Professional Development 
 

• Support initiatives that enhance physician engagement, leadership development, and professional fulfillment.
• Promote a culture of civility, integrity, inclusion, reciprocity, and respect among medical staff and interdisciplinary teams.
• Partner with organizational leaders to strengthen physician experience and professional growth opportunities.
• Advance physician wellness by increasing awareness of available health and wellness resources and addressing barriers to access.
• Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the medical staff community.
• Provide coaching, mentorship, and leadership support to physicians and medical leaders.

Clinical Education and Knowledge Translation

• Assess educational and professional development needs of medical staff.
• Lead the development and implementation of physician orientation, onboarding, and continuing professional development initiatives.
• Support the implementation of new clinical practices, technologies, standards, and regulatory requirements through effective education strategies.
• Promote adult learning principles and evidence-based educational practices.
• Facilitate knowledge translation activities to ensure current research and best practices are incorporated into clinical care.

Evidence-Informed Practice and Innovation

•  Support the integration of emerging research, evidence, and innovation into clinical practice and care models.
• Collaborate with PPQ, operational leaders, provincial program medical directors, and clinical stakeholders to develop clinical pathways, standards, and best-practice frameworks.
• Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of new models of care, quality initiatives, and clinical innovations.
• Champion quality improvement methodologies and evidence-based decision-making throughout the organization.

Leadership and Strategic Partnerships

•  Provide clinical leadership and strategic advice to the Chief Medical Officer regarding quality, safety, education, and physician development.
• Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, operational leaders, residents, and families.
• Participate in organizational strategic planning initiatives related to clinical quality, education, and system transformation.
• Partner with PPQ, Provincial Program Medical Directors, Corridor Medical Leads, and operational leaders to support clinical excellence and performance improvement.
• Represent the Office of the Chief Medical Officer on committees, working groups, and special projects related to quality, infection prevention and control, ethics, emergency preparedness, research, and clinical governance.
• Lead or support clinical excellence initiatives and projects aligned with organizational priorities.

Performance Monitoring, Quality Oversight, and Reporting

• Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality, safety, access, patient experience, and clinical effectiveness.
• Develop and maintain clinical quality dashboards and performance reports for leadership and governance groups.
• Analyze organizational and program-level data to identify trends, risks, opportunities, and improvement priorities.
• Contribute to organizational planning through evidence-informed recommendations and performance insights.
• Support quality oversight processes and accountability frameworks to ensure continuous improvement and achievement of strategic objectives.
• Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership, quality councils, committees, and other stakeholders.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain effective relationships with physicians, operational leaders, healthcare professionals, residents, families, academic institutions, regulatory bodies, and healthcare partners across Alberta.
• Collaborate with external organizations and provincial stakeholders to advance quality, education, innovation, and integrated care initiatives.
• Act as a trusted advisor and advocate for clinical excellence and patient-centred care.
