Lead with Purpose in a Collaborative Maternity Care Environment

Covenant Health is seeking a respected and collaborative physician leader to serve as Facility Medical Lead (FML) for Family Medicine Obstetrics at the Misericordia Community Hospital. This 0.05 FTE leadership role provides an opportunity to support physician engagement, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance safe, high-quality maternity care aligned with Covenant Health's mission and values.

 

As a member of the medical leadership team, the Facility Medical Lead will act as a liaison between Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians, operational leaders, and program partners, supporting the delivery of patient-centered obstetrical care and promoting clinical excellence within the program.

 

About the Role

The Facility Medical Lead provides leadership for Family Medicine Obstetrics at Misericordia Community Hospital and serves as a key liaison between:

  • Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians and site operations
  • Covenant Health leadership and clinical programs
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology specialists and maternal care partners
  • Other interdisciplinary members of the maternity care team

 

This role works in close collaboration with the Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO), Urban Acute and Primary Care, the Provincial Program Medical Lead (PPML), Women’s Health & Pediatrics, Facility Medical Leaders (FML) of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics, operational leaders, and medical staff to support an engaged, high-performing physician team.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Medical Leadership

  • Provide leadership to Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians, including facilitating departmental communication and engagement.
  • Foster strong collaborative relationships between Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians and Obstetrics & Gynecology specialists to support integrated, high-quality maternity care.
  • Promote collaboration among physicians, nursing staff, midwives, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Represent Family Medicine Obstetrics at relevant site, program, and medical leadership meetings.
  • Support adherence to Covenant Health Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and policies.

 

Operations & Clinical Service Delivery

  • Collaborate with operational leaders, Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians, and Obstetrics & Gynecology specialists to support effective maternity care services, patient flow, and quality care delivery.
  • Facilitate physician engagement in program planning, operational initiatives, accreditation activities, and mission integration.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians and leadership to address operational and clinical concerns.

 

Quality & Patient Safety

  • Champion quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-informed maternity care practices.
  • Encourage physician participation in quality initiatives, reviews, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Promote effective documentation practices and the appropriate use of clinical information systems and data.

 

Physician Support & Concerns

  • Support physicians in navigating physician concerns and professionalism processes.
  • Assist Medical Leadership with the review and resolution of concerns as appropriate.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous learning.

 

Workforce Planning & Recruitment

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs and operational leaders to identify physician workforce needs.
  • Support recruitment, retention, onboarding, and integration of Family Medicine Obstetrics physicians.
  • Participate in or delegate representation on Search and Selection Committees as required.

 

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) with eligibility for licensure in Alberta.
  • Active member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
  • Established clinical practice in Family Medicine with obstetrical privileges.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience working within a collaborative healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with specialist and interdisciplinary colleagues in a shared maternity care environment.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and change management skills.
  • Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, physician engagement, and patient-centered care.

 

Appointment Details

  • Position: 0.05 FTE Facility Medical Lead
  • Term: Initial 3-year term, with up to two 1-year renewals
  • Reporting To: Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO), Urban Acute and Primary Care, Provincial Program Medical Lead (PPML) Women’s Health & Pediatrics
  • Selection Process: Formal recruitment and selection process with input from Medical Staff and operational leadership
  • Remuneration: In accordance with Covenant Health contractual agreements
