Covenant Health is seeking a respected and collaborative physician leader to serve as Facility Medical Lead (FML) for the Department of Surgery at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. This 0.2 FTE leadership role offers an opportunity to shape surgical services, support physician engagement, and strengthen integration across site, program, and provincial partners.
As a key member of the medical leadership team, the Facility Medical Lead will champion clinical excellence, foster strong interdisciplinary relationships, and advance high-quality, patient-centered surgical care aligned with Covenant Health’s mission.
About the Role
The Facility Medical Lead provides leadership for the Department of Surgery at Grey Nuns Community Hospital and serves as a critical liaison between:
- Surgical physicians and site operations
- Covenant Health leadership and clinical programs
- Provincial Surgery program leadership and system partners
This role works in close collaboration with the Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO), Urban Acute and Primary Care, and the Provincial Program Medical Lead (Surgery), while supporting Section Leads and contributing to a cohesive and high-performing surgical department.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Leadership
- Provide leadership to Department of Surgery physicians, including chairing departmental meetings and enabling effective communication
- Mentor and support surgical staff, promoting engagement, professionalism, and team cohesion
- Represent Surgery at key forums, including Facility Medical Advisory Committee (FMAC), program meetings, and provincial/corridor discussions
- Ensure compliance with Covenant Health Medical Staff Bylaws and promote effective use of clinical information systems
Operations & Clinical Service Delivery
- Partner with operational leaders to support surgical flow, access, operating room efficiency, and service delivery priorities
- Support physician engagement in program planning and organizational initiatives, including accreditation and mission integration
- Act as a liaison between physicians and operational leadership to align clinical priorities and operational needs
Quality & Patient Safety
- Champion quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-informed surgical practice
- Support physician participation in quality councils, morbidity and mortality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Promote accurate documentation and the effective use of data to inform surgical care delivery
Physician Support & Concerns
- Support department members in navigating physician concerns processes
- Assist the CMO/DCMO with review and resolution of concerns as required
- Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous learning
Workforce Planning & Recruitment
- Collaborate with Medical Affairs and operational leaders to identify workforce needs within the Department of Surgery
- Support recruitment and retention efforts, including participation in or delegation to Search & Selection Committees
- Facilitate onboarding and successful integration of new surgeons into the department
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) with eligibility for licensure in Alberta
- Active member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
- Established clinical practice within Surgery or a surgical subspecialty
- Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to influence within a complex healthcare environment
- Strong communication, collaboration, and change management skills
- Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and physician engagement
Appointment Details
- Position: 0.2 FTE Facility Medical Lead
Term: Initial 3-year term, with up to two 1-year renewals
