Alberta Health Services – North Zone is actively recruiting a Family Medicine Physician to establish a full-time practice in the community of St. Paul, Alberta. This position will provide services for: Community Clinic, Emergency Room Coverage, Inpatient & Outpatient Services, & Long Term Care.

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Duties include but not limited to: 

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence within the community of St. Paul;
  • Establish and maintain full time community based practice within the community;
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services;
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Emergency Department call schedule, as required;
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies;
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Department of Family Medicine;
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs;
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities, as assigned;
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care

Community Information

St. Paul is strategically located in the centre of the northeast region of Alberta, and as a result maintains its status as a major trading centre for the surrounding area. An excellent road system and 3,500 foot paved airstrip provides easy access to and from the area.

 

Population of St. Paul including catchment is 16,205 and is situated 200km northeast of Edmonton on Highway 28.  Because of the town's ideal location in the northeast region of Alberta, product and service industries are taking a second look at St. Paul. 

The variety of recreation facilities offered in St. Paul includes two indoor ice arenas, an indoor swimming pool, a recreation centre/6 sheet curling rink, 14 soccer fields, 14 community parks, 2 tennis courts, 2 sports fields, 8 ball diamonds, a bowling alley, movie theatres, the St. Paul Golf Course [9 holes], and a ski trail area.

Nearby park facilities include the Kehewin Lake Recreation Area [50 campsites, boat launch and fishing], Lac Bellevue Municipal Recreation Area [32 campsites, hiking and water-based recreation opportunities], Lower Therien Lake [canoeing opportunities], Stony Lake Municipal Recreation Area [30 campsites, trails and water-based recreation], the St. Paul Municipal Campground within town limits [50 campsites].

St. Paul offers education in both public and separate division as well as a Francophone option.  Public schools in St. Paul include St. Paul Elementary School [K-5], Racette Junior High School [6-9], and St. Paul Regional School [10-12].  Ecole Du Sommet provides French language education for Grades K to 12, through the East Central Francophone Education Regional Division. Glen Avon Protestant School provides education for Grades K to 9, and St. Paul Regional School provides education for Grades 10 to 12.  Post-secondary programs and courses are available through the Portage College and Blue Quills First Nations College.

St. Paul's life-support is the rich agricultural land that surrounds the town, supplemented by the oil and gas industries. The community is rich in a number of ethnic backgrounds.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Alberta Practice Permit or valid CPSA Letter of Eligibility to practice in the advertised position (proof of to be included with application).
  • Recent hands-on experience (within the past 2 years) in all areas of practice noted within the Description, as the sole provider.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Rural Emergency Room Experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP).
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada – Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM).
