Alberta Health Services - North Zone, is actively recruiting a Family Medicine physician to establish a full-time practice in the community of Edson. 

This position will provide services in Community Clinic, Emergency Room Coverage, Inpatient & Outpatient Services, and Long Term Care.

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence within the community of Edson;
  • Establish and maintain full time community based practice within the community;
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services;
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Emergency Department call schedule, as required;
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies;
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Department of Family Medicine;
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs;
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities, as assigned, and
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care

Edson is a thriving community in the heart of Yellowhead County that has much to offer its residents and travelers alike.

Our town is located in west-central Alberta, Canada. In Yellowhead County, 192km (119 miles) west of Edmonton, along the Yellowhead Highway and 10km (6.2 miles) east of the intersection with Highway 47.

  • To Edmonton: 2.5 hrs
  • To Calgary: 4.5 hrs
  • To Grande Prairie: 3.5 hrs

Located almost exactly between the world-class destinations of Jasper national Park and the City of Edmonton, Edson is a natural, (and welcome!) stopping point for many. With landscape that consists of primarily boreal forest with sand hills and muskeg (low lying bog), there are lots of wildlife that our community experience.

Whether you feel like taking in the natural beauty of Edson, through one of the many walking or cycling trails, the excitement of spending time in Victoria Park by playing or watching one of many slo-pitch games or playing hockey at one of the local arena’s; Edson is home to a variety of activities for you and any members of your family. 

There is an impressive array of health services, all staffed and delivered by an exceptional group of dedicated health professionals which are responsible for delivering acute care, long-term care and community care. The local hospital provides everything from general services to services that include, obstetrics, occupational therapy, emergency care, ultrasound and much more. In addition to the hospital, seniors can access a wide range of services and support programs, including senior lodges like Parkland Senior Citizen Lodge and the Continuing Care Centre. There is one medical clinic in the community, dental clinics, a physiotherapy clinic, optometrist clinic, and counselling services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Alberta Practice Permit or valid CPSA Letter of Eligibility to practice in the advertised position (proof of to be included with application).
  • Recent hands-on experience (within the past 2 years) in all areas of practice noted within the Description, as the sole provider.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Rural Emergency Room Experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP).
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada – Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
