Community Information

The Municipal District of Spirit River is big sky country punctuated with tall grain elevators and oil derricks. It's a patchwork quilt of yellow canola, golden grain and green fields dotted with biscuit colored round bales of hay, all rolling into glorious northern sunrises and sunsets. Spirit River is the home of the mighty Peace River, sparkling northern lights, and abundant wildlife.

The town of Spirit River is located 64 km North of Grande Prairie, 8 km West of Rycroft , and 573 km North West of Edmonton. With a population of 1,025 and serving a catchment area of 6,457 - Spirit River is one of the oldest towns in the Central Peace Region. The original town sight was situated by the river which was known by some as Ghost River, (Chepi-Sepe) and also later as the Spirit River. In 1891, a trading post became the original settlement along the banks of the Spirit River. Because the railroad missed this location, those early settlers decided to move and it split into two communities, one to the west (now Spirit River) and one to the east (now Rycroft).

The economy in Spirit River is based largely on agriculture – crops and livestock – as well as reserves of oil and gas. If you are looking for a quaint town with lots of history to call your home, Spirit River is the place for you!
