Alberta Health Services – North Zone, is actively recruiting a Family Medicine Physician with Palliative Care to establish a full-time practice in the community of Grande Prairie. This position will provide services: Community Clinic and Long Term Care.

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Establish and maintain a full time community based practice in the community of Grande Prairie;
  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence, Grande Prairie;
  • Provide hospital care (rounding) for his/her admitted palliative & long-term care in-patients;
  • Participation on the call rota for unattached patients admitted to Long-Term Care/Continuing Care facilities in Grande Prairie;
  • Participate fully in quality programs and initiatives undertaken within Family Medicine in AHS, including (without limitation) achievement of certain performance indicators followed by AHS, exercising its discretion reasonably;
  • Contribute to and participate in other clinical and administrative duties as assigned;
  • Contribute to and participate in teaching programs and activities;
  • Perform other duties (including without limitation administrative and reporting duties) and attendance at meetings as reasonably scheduled by the Facility Medical Director, Zone Clinical Department Facility Chief or delegate;

GRANDE PRAIRIE:  Located about 450 kilometers northwest of Edmonton, and about the same distance north of Jasper National Park, Grande Prairie offers the best of both worlds - big city amenities without losing the comfort of a smaller community and close proximity to outstanding wilderness areas. The City of Grande Prairie is an economically strong and culturally diverse large urban centre, with a population of about 75,000 and growing.

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH) is a 208 bed acute care facility with a busy emergency department, ICU, NICU and specialty services in OB/Gyn, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, palliative care, pediatrics, and psychiatry; hosting 10,000 discharges, approximately 55,000 emergency department visits, over 1,400 deliveries and more than 9,000 surgical procedures annually. The new hospital also includes radiation therapy services, further increasing the capacity to provide services to the people of Northwestern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia.

Required Qualifications:

  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP);
  • Care of the Elderly Training;
  • Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End-of-Life training (LEAP);
  • Recent and relevant experience (within the past 2 years) in all areas of practice required, as the sole provider; 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS);
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS);
