This is a key leadership position in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), supporting Dispatch, Communications and Deployment, Medical First Response, and Special Teams within the Provincial EMS Portfolio.
 

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
 

In partnership with the EMS Associate Executive Director of Dispatch, Communications and Deployment; the Manager for Medical First Response and Public Access to Defibrillators; and Zone Operations, the EMS MD will provide Medical Direction and consultation for the following aspects of EMS care in Alberta:
 

Dispatch, Communications and Deployment
 

In support of the Associate Executive Director of Dispatch, Communications and Deployment the Medical Director will:

  • Activities related to the Dispatch Centers
    • Assist with the education of each new class of Emergency Communications Officers (ECOs)
    • Participate as clinical consultant in ECO and Dispatch workflows
    • Train in the Medical Priority Dispatch System and support the Dispatch team in continuous quality improvement of this tool
    • Review the Operational Period Report Link from each of three centers
    • Coordinate with AHS EMS Department of Science and Research to support EMS Dispatch related research. 

 

  • Activities related to the EMS Physician Consultant Program(s) (On-Line Medical Consultation, Transport Physician, Pre-hospital Transport Medicine)
    • Support the Senior Medical Director AHS EMS in the administration, quality improvement and sustainability of EMS Physician Consultant Programs
    • Participate as an active physician member of EMS Physician Consultant Programs
    • Actively participate in Physician Consultant QA/QI (Audits, Debriefs, Performance Metrics)
    • Support EMS Physician Consultant conferences and education 

 

Medical First Response (MFR)

In support of the EMS Manager for Medical First Response & Public Access to Defibrillators and accompanying QPS Strategist team the Medical Director will:

  • Assist with the development, review, and revision of the EMS MFR Protocols through the provincial MFR Medical Directors Group (MFR QPS team, Edmonton Fire Rescue Service MD, Calgary Fire Rescue Service MD and others).  The EMS Senior Medical Director has final approval responsibility for EMS medical protocols.
  • Together with the appropriate MFR Strategist meet with individual MFR agencies as required
  • Together with the appropriate MFR team member attend annual Fire Management meetings (e.g. Alberta Fire Chiefs Association)
  • Assist Zonal Clinical EMS representatives for presentations at local Governmental Council meetings as necessary.
  • Provide and fax prescriptions for BLS MFR agencies to the appropriate pharmacies (who may not have their own medical directors). 
  • Assist the MFR QPS team with QI/QA issues that arise on an as needed basis
  • Assist and attend MFR training sessions as appropriate.

Special Teams

In support of AHS EMS Zone Operations teams the Medical Director will:

  • Assist with clinical decisions regarding Tactical EMS (TEMS), Public Safety Units (PSU), Incident Response (IRP), Rapid Access Paramedic Team (RAP Bike) and Emergency Preparedness (Disaster) Planning divisions.
  • Assist subject matter experts and the QPS team with the maintenance, review and revision of EMS Provincial Protocols for IRP and TEMS teams.
  • Review daily reports from both Edmonton and Calgary Zone IRP and TEMS teams.
  • Assist and attend Special Teams training sessions as appropriate.

Attend and participate in AHS and EMS leadership meetings as required.
 

Qualifications and Required Attributes:
 

The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada and shall have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
 

Preference will be given to candidates with training or experience in primary care, emergency medicine and emergency medical services.

 
In addition, the successful applicant shall have:

  • The practitioner will obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment.

Reporting Relationship:

The Medical Director, EMS Dispatch, Medical First Response, and Special Operations

will report directly to the Senior Medical Director, EMS.
 

This role will also require working partnerships with the Associate Executive Director for EMS Dispatch, within Medical First Response, Zone Operations and with other EMS Medical Directors.

  

Additional Information:

  • FTE: 0.5
  • Shared administrative support will be provided by AHS MIH for the Zone Associate Executive Director and Zone Medical Director.
  • Remuneration is based on CMO Policy 01-01.
