The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with the Department of Critical Care Medicine and Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a position of Locum Adult Intensivist to be based part time at both the Sturgeon Community Hospital and University of Alberta Hospital.  This locum hire would cover a one-year period beginning July 2026.

Located in St. Albert, Alberta the Sturgeon Community Hospital is a 169 bed hospital offering a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialty services within cardiology, medicine, obstetrics, surgery, gastroenterology, critical care, and emergency medicine.  The Sturgeon Community Hospital ICU consists of 6 ICU beds and 3 stepdown beds, servicing primarily medical and surgical patients.  Specialized services including renal replacement therapy, inhaled epoprostenol, and proning are available in our unit.  We are a closed unit served by 5 fellowship trained intensivists.  There is full time coverage by a team of critical care trained Critical Care Providers.  

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the University of Alberta Hospital is a 650 bed quaternary hospital offering a wide range of subspecialty services and procedures including interventional radiology, an active organ transplant program, burn surgical service and trauma service.  The University of Alberta E. G. King General Systems ICU consists of 2 units and 42 ICU beds, servicing medical, surgical, transplant, burn and trauma patients. It is also a closed unit served by 20 intensivists, 5 of which are on service any given day and supported by residents and fellows, and a full multi-disciplinary team.

Both units are active members of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alberta routinely participating in departmental research and other administrative activities.  Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools.

he successful candidate will be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC or FRCSC, possess a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).  

We are particularly interested in those with superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to function well within interdisciplinary teams.  Established plans to develop formal training/expertise in areas such as ultrasound program development, patient safety factors, organ donation, or medical leadership, will be a necessary component of this job. It is an expectation that the successful candidate will contribute to programs at both the University of Alberta Hospital and Sturgeon Community Hospital. 

The successful candidate will be a clinical academic colleague within the academic Department of Critical Care Medicine.
