Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Corridor invites applications for the role of Medical Lead, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the University of Alberta Hospital / Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (UAH/MAHI).

 

This 0.10 FTE position governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, reports to the Corridor Clinical Department Lead (CCDL), Cardiac Sciences, the Hospital Medical Director (HMD), UAH/MAHI; and the Corridor Clinical Department Hospital Lead (CCDHL), Cardiology – UAH/MAHI.

 

The Medical Lead provides physician leadership for the planning, organization, quality, and continuous improvement of diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization services for adult and pediatric patients at the MAHI and across the Edmonton Corridor. Working in partnership with operational leadership, the Medical Lead will advance patient-centered care, evidence-informed care while fostering collaboration, innovation, accountability, and excellence in clinical practice.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide physician leadership for the delivery and continuous improvement of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory services.
  • Champion the implementation and advancement of multidisciplinary Heart Team models of care and clinical decision-making, consistent with contemporary Canadian and international guidelines and standards of care, in collaboration with and as guided by senior AHS medical leadership.
  • Partner with operational leadership to optimize patient access, patient flow, resource utilization, scheduling, and operational performance.
  • Promote fair, transparent, and evidence-informed allocation of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory resources consistent with patient needs and organizational priorities.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and promote a culture of patient safety, continuous learning, and evidence-informed practice.
  • Collaborate with the Cardiac Sciences Quality Council and the MAZ Health Technology Assessment Committee to support quality improvement and the safe adoption of new technologies.
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative culture among physicians, nursing, allied health professionals, and operational leaders.
  • Support physician engagement, leadership development, mentorship, and succession planning.
  • Promote excellence in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and continuing medical education and support clinical research and innovation.
  • Collaborate with medical and operational leaders across the Edmonton Corridor to advance integrated, high-quality cardiovascular care.
  • Promote accountability, professionalism, transparency, and responsible stewardship of healthcare resources while supporting departmental and organizational strategic priorities.

 

The position has an expected term of two years, with the possibility of renewal following review of leadership objectives, funding, and organizational needs.

 


 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong abilities in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, and collaborative leadership, together with a demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, physician engagement, and innovation. The successful candidate will be recognized by peers as an outstanding clinician and an effective physician leader, and by operational leaders as a collaborative, respectful, and trusted leader who values partnership and shared decision-making, with the ability to build consensus and lead multidisciplinary teams.

 

Candidates must be registered or eligible for registration with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent, eligible to work in Canada, and be eligible for or have current licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
