Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Zone invites applications for the role of Medical Lead, Medicine Patient Flow.
This 0.20 FTE position reports to the Associate Zone Medical Director (AZMD), Emergency Medicine and Patient Flow and to the AZMD, Adult Critical Care, Neurosciences, Transplant, Academic Affairs, Cardiac Sciences, Medicine, Ambulatory Care, and Renal.
The successful candidate is responsible for working with sites and zone programs to improve the demand and capacity balance of the healthcare system. This role will be integral in the work to implement the AHS Review recommendations.
Responsible for:
Execution of strategic initiatives supporting patient flow as outlined by the AZMD Patient flow, AZMD Medicine, and the Edmonton Zone Demand Capacity Executive Committee.
Supporting the development of a clear strategic plan for senior leadership with a focus on medical programs.
- Edmonton Zone Short Term Escalation Plans (EZ-STEP)
- Work with Physician Leads for the medical programs (on-site)
- To implement EZ-STEP, and Rapid rounds
- Work with Medical Informatics Leads for medical programs to ensure alignment of connect care workflow and data extraction in support of EZ-STEP
- Support ongoing development and improvement of EZ-STEP actions, by identifying opportunities to continue to improve patient flows.
- Bed Service Mapping
- Working the Zone Demand Capacity Executive Committee to support Bed Service Mapping and leading the medical program areas.
- Working with IOC Physician Lead and IOC team:
- Assist sites and medical programs with daily demand and capacity challenges.
- Support real time capacity reporting, monitoring, planning, analytics in support of real time patient flow decision making.
- Engage and collaborate:
- Collaborate with Facility Medical Directors / Zone Clinical Department Heads / Physician Leaders / Physicians
- Identify opportunities to alter physician staffing to improve patient flow and physician wellness
- Work through RAAPID protocols to ensure provision of timely, high-quality patient care while respecting current challenging physician environment and fee structures
- Identify previously unappreciated barriers to patient flow
The position has an expected start date of approximately November 1st, 2023 and an expected term of 2 years.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and a passion for quality and patient safety working as a part of a leadership team. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and is considered a strong clinician by peers.
Candidates must be registered or eligible for registration with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent, eligible to work in Canada, and be eligible for or have current licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
