Within the Physician Assistant Program, the Medical Leader will:

  • Lead strategic planning and implementation of sustainable models of care involving PAs, including 
    expanded weekday, evening, weekend, and on-call service coverage.
  • Maintain a current AHS email and review messages regularly to support consistent and reliable 
    communication.
  • Assist in the development and optimization of program structure and remuneration models for the PA 
    workforce.
  • Participate in the following activities:
    • Act as a liaison and support for physicians supervising or working alongside PAs.
    • Contribute to program development, operational implementation, and ongoing program evaluation.
    • Support the recruitment, assessment, and evaluation of PAs and supervising physicians.
    • Provide feedback to support refinement of the PA model and scope optimization.
    • Collaborate with AHS Medical Affairs and CPSA to standardize PA evaluation and supervision processes.
  • Meet monthly with the Medical Affairs Program Manager to discuss:
    • PA performance and professional conduct
    • Clinical learning environment and collegiality
    • Supervision models and duty hour management
    • Onboarding/orientation of new supervising physicians and PAs
    • Workforce planning and retention
    • Access to Connect Care and clinical systems
    • Integration of quality improvement and education initiatives
    • Emerging issues including crisis management or role clarity
  • Work collaboratively with Medical Affairs and clinical leaders to develop innovative coverage models that enhance continuity of care and support physician capacity.
  • Participate on relevant leadership committees (e.g., Zone Clinical Department Head Committee) to foster alignment and communication across programs.
  • Ensure objectives align with high standards of care, education, and team-based practice across the Calgary Zone.
  • Lead collaborative efforts to enhance physician-PA relationships, communication, and interprofessional integration.
  • Support investigations related to concerns about PA performance or behavior as requested by the Program Manager.
  • Fulfill all other responsibilities as per AHS Bylaws, Rules, and as delegated by the Zone Medical Director.

Proven leadership, communication, organizational, change management, team building and facilitation skills.

  • Expertise in developing and providing resources, consultation, and collaborative support to stakeholder teams.
  • Ability to design, tailor, implement and evaluate effective strategies to meet identified priorities.
  • Experience in supporting and promoting clinical best practice and experience as a change agent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, well developed interpersonal skills, ability to cultivate positive relationships and passion for patient safety.
  • Alberta Health Services privileges to practice at AHS facilities.
