Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is seeking a Medical Microbiologist for a 1.0 FTE position at the Diagnostic & Scientific Centre (DSC) in Calgary, Alberta. APL is a provincial, publicly funded, multi-site laboratory organization providing comprehensive laboratory services. APL also has an affiliate agreement with the University of Calgary (UC), providing opportunities for teaching, training, and collaboration.
The microbiology laboratory at the DSC provides all hospital and community clinical microbiology testing for Calgary and surrounding areas, encompassing a population of more than 1.8 million, and serves as a regional reference centre for bacteriology, susceptibility testing, mycology, and parasitology. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including total laboratory automation, and offers a wide gamut of testing utilizing both conventional and molecular techniques. The successful candidate would be joining a team of medical microbiologists that fosters and supports clinical and academic excellence, innovation, and career development.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
The position carries clinical responsibilities, including medical microbiologist on-call coverage, for Calgary and for regional hospitals in Alberta, medical leadership of program areas within the microbiology laboratory, leading quality improvement and assurance initiatives, acting as a liaison between the laboratory and clinical stakeholders, and providing medical supervision of laboratory staff and technologists.
The successful candidate will be recommended for appointment to the University of Calgary, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, at a rank commensurate with experience and qualifications, and will be expected to train and instruct students and medical residents.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include: MD degree or equivalent, eligibility for medical licensure in Alberta, and certification in Medical Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) (or being eligible for the same).
Candidates must be able to demonstrate:
· Medical expertise, with commitment to patient care and laboratory excellence.
· Leadership, with a track record of beginning, leading, and completing initiatives.
· Communication of ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, in an organized manner.
· Collaboration with other staff, teams, and disciplines, able to build and maintain trust.
· Advocacy, in setting and communicating priorities for the laboratory and for clinical practice.
Expertise/subspecialty training in Laboratory Informatics or Infectious Diseases will be considered an asset. In the case that the candidate would be interested in dedicated FTE to the above, this may be negotiated based on availability and additional recruitment processes.
