Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites independently licensed physicians to join the newly established MRP Surgical Hospitalist Service – Orthopedics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, one of Edmonton’s premier tertiary care centres.
This innovative service is designed to support post‑operative orthopedic patients who require ongoing medical optimization and recovery beyond the initial 48–72 hours following surgery. As an MRP Surgical Hospitalist, you will serve as the Most Responsible Physician (MRP) for patients transferred to the service, providing continuity of care during a critical phase of convalescence.
About the Role
Physicians in this role enjoy a highly collaborative practice environment, working closely with orthopedic surgeons and designated surgical delegates to ensure seamless transitions of care and timely management of any evolving surgical or medical issues. This model allows you to focus on inpatient medical management while maintaining strong professional partnerships with surgical colleagues.

Reporting Structure
This position reports to the RAH Surgical Hospitalist Physician Lead, the Hospital Medical Director, and the relevant Corridor Clinical Department Lead.
Service Model and Schedule
• Rotation structure: 1-week service blocks
• On-site hours: 0700–1700 daily
• Patient transfers occur between 0700–1700
• Call structure: Second call from 1700–0700, with first call managed by in-house associate physicians
• Patient census: Approximately 20–25 patients
• Team support includes ward-anchored associate physicians and dedicated pharmacy support
As the service continues to mature, there is opportunity for expansion to include Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, contingent on service needs and resource availability. The above service model and schedule is subject to change as the service evolves.

Who We’re Looking For
We welcome adaptable, team‑oriented clinicians who are passionate about acute inpatient care and excited to help shape an evolving service. The team is seeking physicians with a background in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, with a strong interest and expertise in the care of surgical inpatients. Particular emphasis is placed on medical stabilization during the rehabilitation phase, management of complex medical comorbidities in post-operative patients, and interdisciplinary collaboration to support safe recovery and discharge planning.
