Neurosurgeon Locum in Calgary

The University of Calgary section of Neurosurgery is inviting applications from Neurosurgeons interested in a locum tenens appointment at the Foothills Medical Center for 9-12 months (commencing August 2026). For the right candidate, there may be an opportunity to start 1-2 months earlier to overlap with the neurosurgeon starting sabbatical.

The position supports the practice for a faculty member during a sabbatical leave. Qualifications include an MD, a specialist certificate in Neurosurgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta.  You must be a Canadian citizen or hold Permanent Residency (PR) status in Canada.

The primary role of the locum will be to provide outstanding neurosurgical care to spine and some general neurosurgery patients in the outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and operating room settings. The successful candidate will also have an active role in teaching trainees and undergraduate students rotating on the neurosurgical service. Administrative support will be provided. Remuneration will be based on a negotiated fee-for-service model.

The ideal candidate will capitalize on this one-year opportunity to advance their career in adult neurosurgery, with an emphasis on spine surgery, through a clinical focus in this area in collaboration with an established, experienced team, and by using up to 0.25 full-time equivalent weekly hours to pursue their own non-clinical academic objectives.
