Position Description:
The Department of Pediatrics (DoP), invite applicants to apply to a 1.0 FTE, AMHSP Pediatric Neurologist position, with subspecialty interest and training in epilepsy. The position is part of the Section of Pediatric Neurology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, within Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone.
The preferred target start date is July 1, 2025.
This position involves a primary commitment of 70% to clinical activity with expectations that the successful candidate will also contribute broadly to the academic and educational activities of the Section. The relative contributions to academics, education and/or administration that comprise the remaining 30% of the position, will be allocated based on the successful candidate’s goals and interests in alignment with opportunities and needs within the Section.
This position involves a commitment to clinical activity comprised of general neurology in-patient coverage (Monday-Friday, 08:00-17:00 daily), as well as staffing out-patient clinics (new referrals and follow-ups from service with a variety of neurological conditions). As the priority for this position is training in epilepsy, the position will also entail contribution to the long-term monitoring (LTM) service, which includes admission of patients for event clarification and epilepsy surgery work-up. As such, the ability to read and report EEGs (routine, LTM and preferably those associated with surgical evaluations) is an absolute requirement.
The position also comes with a concomitant expectation to contribute to on-call services provided by the Section of Pediatric Neurology to ensure 24/7 access to qualified expertise. This will be part of an equivalent share with the rest of the Section's full-time members.
The successful candidate will join an existing group of 10 full-time Pediatric Neurologists and 6 part-time/adjunct faculty. Within the Section of Pediatric Neurology there is a wide breadth of subspecialty expertise and interests such as: epilepsy, sleep, neuromuscular disorders, stroke, neurocritical care, neurotrauma, neuroinflammation, headache, neonatal neurology, as well as fetal neurology and neurodevelopment.
In terms of Pediatric Epilepsy, the applicant would join 4 full-time pediatric neurologists-epileptologists as part of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Comprehensive Childhood Epilepsy Program. Activities in this program are inclusive of epilepsy monitoring and surgical evaluation of infants and children, inpatient and outpatient routine EEG services, PICU & NICU continuous EEG monitoring, ambulatory EEG evaluation, a ketogenic diet program, vagus-nerve stimulation assessment and monitoring, clinical neuropharmacology, and translational laboratory research. Our epilepsy program also runs in conjunction with the adult epilepsy program at the University of Calgary as part of the Calgary Epilepsy Program.
The Section of Pediatric Neurology is based at Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH) and provides comprehensive in-patient consultative services to all in-patient units, 2 NICU's (ACH and FMC) and one level-two PICU within the Calgary region. The Section also provides out-patient clinical management, for a large number of patients with complex conditions, at the ACH as well as an outreach clinic in Medicine Hat. The approximate 2+ million population catchment area includes all of southern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan, and southeastern British Columbia. Pediatric Neurology is well-established program at the ACH that receives exceptional support for growth, with an expectation that it develops into a top-tier quaternary referral center. Further, all members of the Section are encouraged to contribute to the academic mission, and educational scholarship, within Pediatric Neurology.
