Job Summary:
The Provincial Medical Director will provide medical leadership across Adult Concurrent Disorders and Compassionate Intervention programs, working in collaboration with Operational Leads to ensure timely, effective, and evidence-informed addiction and mental health care is available to clients across the province.
Addiction Services is one of the portfolios within Recovery Alberta supporting all recovery, addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, and harm reduction programs and services throughout the province of Alberta under a Recovery Orientated System of Care (ROSC) model. The Concurrent Disorder programs are the novel programs including the Concurrent Disorder Units at Alberta Hospital Edmonton and Peter Lougheed Centre as well as the Virtual Addiction Psychiatry ACT program along with pillars within the provincial system of Claresholm Centre of Addiction and Mental Health and the Centennial Centre of Addiction and Mental Health concurrent bed-based programs. Compassionate Intervention is a province-wide initiative designed to support addiction and mental health services delivered across Alberta. The CI model is rooted in the principles of evidence-informed continuity of care and multidisciplinary collaboration, operating 7 days a week. It supports patients with severe substance use disorders stabilizing and transitioning into the community and offers ongoing psychiatric support for concurrent disorders. It is a last case scenario for those at heightened risk and not succeeding in the vast voluntary system.
Executive physician leadership is central to driving high-performing, patient-centred health systems. This role blends expertise with strategic oversight, ensuring that medical decisions, operational priorities, and organizational goals are aligned. An effective executive physician leader shapes culture, fosters accountability, advances quality and safety, and supports teams through evidence-informed decision-making. They build strong relationships across clinical, operational, administrative, and community partners; champion innovation; and guide systems through complexity and change. This position, working directly with operational counterparts, requires exceptional communication, sound judgment, and the ability to translate clinical insight into sustainable policy, operational planning, and workforce strategies that improve outcomes and strengthen organizational performance.
As a founding member of this innovative program, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping its development, contributing to clinical service design, outcome measurement, and evidence-based research.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
• Operational Partnership: Collaborate with operational leaders to shape budgets, optimize resource allocation, and develop service delivery models that enhance efficiency, access, and patient outcomes to lead the development and implementation of Compassionate Intervention for adults in Alberta.
• Strategic Clinical Leadership: Provide vision and direction for clinical programs, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, population needs, and system-level health strategies within Recovery Alberta.
• Quality, Safety, and Performance: Oversee clinical quality initiatives, lead implementation of evidence-based practices, and ensure high standards for patient safety, risk management, and continuous improvement.
• Workforce Leadership and Development: Support physician recruitment, retention, mentorship, and performance; promote a culture of professionalism, wellness, accountability, and interprofessional collaboration.
• Governance and Policy Influence: Advise executive teams and governing bodies on clinical matters; contribute to policy development, regulatory compliance, and system transformation initiatives.
• Stakeholder and Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with health-system partners, community agencies, and government stakeholders; represent medical leadership in joint planning and integrated service approaches.
• Innovation and System Improvement: Champion digital health tools, new models of care, and research initiatives; evaluate emerging evidence and technology to guide modernization efforts.
• Crisis Leadership and Risk Management: Lead medical response during emergencies, operational disruptions, or public-health events, ensuring coordinated clinical decision-making and clear
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of addiction recovery and concurrent disorders to effectively manage the complexities of addiction services and treatment. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with experience in medical leadership and be considered a strong clinician by peers.
The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
The successful applicant will preferably be recognized as a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Area of Focused Competence in Addiction Medicine and/or a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine by College of Family Physicians of Canada and/or Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine certification or equivalent and/or other areas of experience needed for the role.
In addition, the successful applicant shall:
• Have experience in provision of treatment of addiction and mental health.
• Have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
• Obtain and maintain a Recovery Alberta Medical Staff Appointment.

Reporting Relationship:
The practitioner will report to the Senior Medical Director, Addiction Services.
Term:
Start date is negotiable.

Additional Information:
This position is a 0.4 FTE. Remuneration is in accordance with CMO Policy 01-01 for contracted medical leadership positions.
