The Provincial Medical Director, Palliative Care, Hospice and End-of-Life Care provides strategic and clinical leadership to advance a coordinated, accessible, high-quality, and sustainable palliative care system across Assisted Living Alberta (ALA). This role oversees the integration and delivery of palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care services across community, supportive living, home care, rural, virtual, and outreach settings
Key Responsibilities
• Provide provincial medical leadership for palliative care, hospice, and end-of-life services across Alberta.
• Lead physician workforce planning, recruitment, retention, and succession planning.
• Develop provincial standards, care pathways, quality indicators, and performance measures.
• Promote equitable access to palliative care services throughout Alberta.
• Support education, research, innovation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Work collaboratively with the operational dyad for palliative care, hospice and end of life
• Collaborate with provincial, community, and healthcare partners.
• Contribute to strategic, operational, and business planning.
Other accountabilities:
• Implement and sustain a provincial program model that ensures safe, consistent, compassionate, and high-quality care.
• Maintain a corridor-based leadership structure that balances provincial standards with local operational needs.
• Partner with operational leaders to integrate palliative care across programs and ensure effective care coordination.
• Ensure alignment with organizational priorities, provincial mandates, quality standards, and person- and family-centred care principles.
• Monitor outcomes, incidents, and performance indicators to drive continuous improvement.
• Support quality assurance, accreditation readiness, audit responses, and implementation of best practices.
Reports to the Chief Medical Officer, Assisted Living Alberta
Term starts date: September 1, 2026
Qualifications
• MD or equivalent medical degree.
• CFPC or RCPSC certification.
• Advanced training or certification in Palliative Care.
• Licensed or eligible for licensure with CPSA.
• Demonstrated healthcare leadership experience.
• Eligible for Medical Staff Appointment in Alberta.
