Job Summary:
The Provincial Medical Director, Youth Addiction Services, will provide medical leadership in collaboration with Operational Leads to ensure timely, effective, and evidence-informed addiction and concurrent disorder care is available to clients across the province. The Provincial Medical Director will also help lead the integration of the system to support the needs of all Albertans.
In addition to the existing addiction services, the Provincial Medical Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the development, contributing to clinical service design, outcome measurement, and evidence-based research for Compassionate Intervention (CI).
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
- Provide medical leadership and oversight of services provided to youth at various sites across the province.
- In conjunction with the Operational Director(s), develop a framework for voluntary and involuntary addiction treatment services for youth under the age of 18 and program delivery that supports the goals and measures in alignment with patient and family focused centered care and the Alberta Recovery Oriented System of Care Model.
- Collaborate with service providers across various communities and/or sites to develop and ensure integrated provincial service planning addresses the dependencies between Provincial Health Agencies, Health Service Delivery Organizations, facilities, programs and local communities.
- Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance with clinical expectations/standards of practice for physicians.
- Develop and enact a physician workforce plan for the physicians’ providing services in the program.
- Develop and enact a physician leadership workforce plan for the portfolio.
- Work collaboratively to enact physician compensation models that support the recruitment and retainment of physicians.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships to align priorities, address gaps, and coordinate service delivery to ensure delivery of quality, innovative, and efficient health services:
- Provide clinical and operational leadership to ensure high-quality, safe, innovative and evidence-informed standards of care that ensure health outcomes are being achieved.
- Lead or participate in evaluation, quality improvement, and research activities.
Qualifications and Required Attributes:
The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with subspecialty certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and shall have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Addiction Medicine and/or a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine by College of Family Physicians of Canada and/or Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine certification or equivalent is preferred.
In addition, the successful applicant shall have:
- More than five years of research experience;
- Experience in provision of treatment of addiction and mental health;
- The practitioner will obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment.

The practitioner will report to the Senior Medical Director, Addiction Services
