SECTION CHIEF PEDIATRIC SURGERY AND FACILITY SURGERY SITE CHIEF ALBERTA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, CALGARY ZONE AHS
Responsibilities of the Zone Clinical Section Chief according to the AHS medical staff rules:
- Recommending medical staff appointments and clinical privileges, as well as changes to the appointments and clinical privileges to the Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery.
- Developing and implementation of policies, procedures, and practices, together with goals and objectives for the zone clinical section which are consistent with the mission, role statement and strategic plans of AHS and the Department of Surgery.
- In keeping with the objectives and goals of AHS, assigning duties and responsibilities to members of the zone clinical section and to promote and represent the activities of the zone clinical section.
- Supervising the clinical work of all members of the zone clinical section.
- Assisting in the development of AHS-wide criteria for procedures to AHS.
- Promoting educational programs for zone clinical section members and other staff associated with the zone clinical section.
- Developing and promoting departmental and sectional research activities.
- Ensuring that Department of Surgery policies regarding quality of patient care and safety are developed and implemented.
- Performing Triggered Initial Assessments and Triggered Reviews as delegated by the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery pursuant to Part 6 of the AHS Bylaws.
- Assisting the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery in performing periodic reviews for members of the Calgary Zone clinical section pursuant to Part 5 of AHS Bylaws.
- Acting as designate for the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery for those duties assigned to the zone clinical department or designate by the AHS Bylaws or AHS medical staff rules.
- Be accountable for the quality of medical care and services within the zone clinical section in a manner consistent with the operating principles of Alberta Health Services.
- Ensure appropriate utilization of zonal resources by the section members, particularly in the area of beds, operating rooms, ambulatory care, and diagnostic testing and drug utilization.
Other duties designated by the Zone Clinical Department Head:
- Convene regular meetings of members of the zone clinical section, to be held at least quarterly, and minutes recorded.
- Supply, at the request of the Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery such materials from the section as required for departmental reports or for the department website.
- Develop a five-year plan for future AHS development of the Section, in consultation with the members of the section and the Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery, which is consistent with AHS and Department of Surgery Strategic Plans.
- Participate in the Department of Surgery’s strategic planning processes and retreats.
- Participate and attend the monthly Department of Surgery executive committee meetings and the quarterly Department of Surgery Section Chief meetings.
The second role in the position, Facility Surgery Site Chief Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH), plays an important role in supporting the mission of the Department of Surgery. They will work closely with a dyad partner, the Executive Director of Surgery, and together they are responsible for daily operational issues and matters pertaining to the surgical suites at ACH. They will report to the Zone Clinical Department Head of Surgery and, together with the Executive Director of Surgery, will advise the Site leadership (Facility Medical Director and Senior Operating Officer) regarding surgical issues related to patient volume, patient acuity, patient safety, resources, or infrastructure.
Committees and Representation
- Chair of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Operating room committee.
- Surgery representative of ACH on the Department of Surgery executive committee.
- Surgery representative of ACH at the Department of Surgery annual retreat.
- Surgery representative on ACH ad hoc committees related to site physical planning, workforce planning, disaster planning, or other issues related to site resource utilization.
Duties and Responsibilities
- They will work collaboratively with the Department of Surgery Site Section Leads, leaders from other Surgical Departments, site Anesthesia leaders, Operating Room and Post Anesthetic Care Unit Nursing leaders, leaders in related health disciplines, and site leadership.
- They will be responsible for the implementation and follow-up of action items from the Site’s Operating Room committee.
- They will collaborate with other Calgary zone leaders to develop, implement, and evaluate new and innovative models of care that support more efficient utilization of O.R. resources, or improved service delivery, or improved patient satisfaction.
- They will support activities of the site and zone quality assurance committees and any applicable safety initiatives.
- They will support quality improvement initiatives and participate in site and Department of Surgery initiatives arising from NSQIP data.
- They will support activities of research and education arising from the offices of the Department of Surgery.
- They will work with site leadership and section leadership regarding recruitment and workforce plans. They will support the onboarding and orientation of new surgeons to their site.
- They will work with site leadership and Department of Surgery section leadership to address concerns that arise regarding surgeon behavior.
Qualifications:
This position is open to current members of the Section of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Calgary Zone AHS, who are in good standing and hold active privileges in AHS. Applicants from section members primarily located at the Alberta Children Hospital will be considered.
The ideal candidate will have leadership experience by holding leadership positions in local, provincial, or national societies related to their Royal College specialty or leadership positions in AHS or the Cumming School of Medicine. They will have excellent communication skills and conflict management skills. They will have experience with team building, engaging others and implementing new initiatives. They will reflect the core values of the Department of Surgery and Alberta Health Services and the Cumming School of Medicine in their current practice.
FTE and Remuneration:
0.3 FTE, Medical Affairs Honorarium Grid (Currently $ 81,450.00 per annum)

5 years
July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2030.
