This is a permanent leadership position starting January 1, 2026 (0.1 FTE) for the Intercare: Brentwood, Chinook, Southwood centres. This position provides essential leadership to the physician groups at the above listed centres. The position is integral in assisting with the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure 24/ 7 admissions and discharges from the unit and strives to promote quality assurance and continuing improvement activities, including infection prevention and control. The position is also an essential part of the medical care team as it provides interim medical care when attending or on-call physicians are unavailable, hence ensuring uninterrupted medical care delivery. Additionally, this role is important to ensure efficient smooth operations as it works in collaboration with Medical Director, Integrated Facility Living and Community by managing matters relating to physician recruitment and performance in collaboration with the Section Chief- Seniors Care, Department of Family Medicine. Site Medical Leader Responsibilities: 1. Medical Staff Appointment Ø Have a medical staff appointment with the department of Family Medicine, Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone in the Section of Seniors Care. 2. Assessment of Medical Needs & Medical Staff Supervision Ø Be responsible for the assessment of medical needs and for the evaluation of the quality of medical services at the site(s). Ø Ensure medical staff have and maintain the necessary training and experience pertinent to the practice of Continuing Care. Ø Supervise the medical staff and ensure that physicians adhere to Continuing Care physician expectations or rules and regulations that govern medical practice. Ø Participate in the periodic review process for attending physicians as outlined by ALA Medical Staff Bylaws. Ø Use the non-compliance algorithm developed by the Site Leader Medical group in the management of physicians not performing to expectations. (refer to the DFM issues resolution form) Ø Support staff regarding physician non-compliance in a timely manner. Ø Promote the highest medical service standards. 3. Quality Assurance Program Ø Participate with the Department of Family Medicine and ALA, Calgary Zone in the design, development and implementation of a regional Continuing Care Quality Assurance program for medical staff. (This may include the development of clinical practice guidelines, a CME program specific to specialized geriatrics, clinical audit, clinical research and the further development of the Continuing Care physician expectation, rules and regulations). 4. SML Group Ø Attend monthly meetings of the SML Group as an executive member: o the committee is the main conduit for effective and timely communication and information sharing between the Department of Family Medicine and other SML. o the committee allows for further discussion of Calgary Zone initiatives such as guidelines for policy and for the initiation of discussion on clinical issues in residents living in facilities. Ø Provide the Section Chief, Seniors Care with a monthly activity report at the end of each month that includes physician and clinical issues, and brief committee reports and site-specific information. 5. Professional Development Ø Participate in Medical Leader educational programs. 6. Communication Ø Provide contact information and availability for urgent communications. Ø Be expected to use electronic means of communication (fax and/or email). 7. Liaison Ø Serves as a key liaison between attending physicians, facility management, Department of Family Medicine and ALA. Ø Be expected to bring Calgary Zone initiatives back to the care centre for planning and possible implementation. Ø Represent the Calgary Zone at the care centre level and will represent the care centre at the zone level. 8. Complaints Ø Manage complaints regarding physicians from facility administration, residents or families and if necessary and discus such unresolved complaints with the SML group. 9. Zone Strategic Planning Ø Be supportive of any Calgary Zone strategic planning that promotes the highest quality patient/resident care. 10. On site Presence Ø Provide a presence on site at each facility to provide support to staff and administration. Ø Be available while not on site to the care centre organization and its staff. 11. Provision of Care Ø Support staff by providing interim medical care where the attending physician is unavailable. Ø Facilitate patient movement by admitting patients until an attending physician is identified. 12. Infection Control Ø Assist in infection control programs such as monitoring infection control rates, advising an outbreak management and implementing the outbreak standard where appropriate. Ø Receive regular reports from the care centre regarding IP&C performance measures. 13. Medication and Formulary Ø Support the implementation of the Long-Term Care P&T Formulary by working with the organization pharmacy provider. Ø Address non-formulary request from physicians as needed by pharmacy services. 14. Advice and Support to Staff Ø Provide advice to staff on clinical issues; e.g. provide practical advice regarding family dynamics (i.e. guardianship issues, level of care issues, hospital transfer data, critical incidents, outbreak management and ethical issues). Ø Provide support and advice regarding resident, family and/or staff issues. Ø Seek new and innovative ways to provide services to residents. 15. Leadership Ø Provide leadership in proposing developing and evaluating projects/programs that seeks new methods of promoting health. Ø Take a leadership role in local advisory committees, e.g. professional or clinical committees established to develop and review local policy and quality improvement. Ø Provide the care centre organization with a regular report on Calgary Zone activities. 16. In-Service Provision Ø Provide in-service education and support to staff. 17. Qualifications · Must have a family medicine designation with the College of Family physicians of Canada The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
