Site Medical Lead (SML) – ALA: Provide site-level medical leadership for Type A Continuing Care homes, support clinical governance and quality improvement, engage physicians, and align site activities with ALA priorities.
Alignment with ALA Strategy, Priorities & Initiatives
• Improve access and continuity of medical care in the CCHs
• Advance clinical governance and QI initiatives (e.g., stewardship, deprescribing, transitions of care)
• Promote resident- and family-centred care, safety, and equity
• Strengthen physician engagement, coverage models, and accountability
• Ensure a system is in place to maintain 24/7 medical coverage for residents in the Type A CCH.
(i) Support staff by providing interim medical care where the attending physician is unavailable.
(ii) Facilitate patient movement by admitting patients until an attending physician is identified.
• Ensure a process is in place for addressing medical staff who are non-compliant with policies, procedures and/or standards.
Attend monthly meetings of the SLM Group as an executive member:
• The SLM meetings are the main conduit for effective and timely communication and information sharing between the Medical Directors and Directors of Care at the facilities.
• Actively participate in discussion of Calgary corridor initiatives such as guidelines for policy and clinical issues in residents living in facilities.
• Provide the Medical Director Integrated Facility living with a monthly activity report at the end of each month that includes physician and clinical issues, brief committee reports and site-specific information.
• Address the Question of the Month in the best possible way, including all Age Care Facilities.
Quality Assurance & Reporting (QAR)
• Participate in ALA area/site QI and safety structures; report on key indicators
• Lead corrective actions following audits, reviews, and critical incidents
• Ensure MRP/coverage models support safe, timely care; escalate risks appropriately
• Quarterly QAR updates to ALA area leadership; participation in CCH quality forums; alignment with local scorecards
Actively participate and contribute to the monthly Site Medical Lead Meetings. Disperse information as appropriate to Medical Directors, Physicians and Directors of Care at their sites.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a CCFP designation and be eligible for a Medical Staff appointment with Alberta Health Services as per the current Medical Staff Bylaws. Clinical experience managing the care of Seniors Care patients will be beneficial, previous leadership experience is not required but will be an asset.
The candidate must have or be eligible for General Register with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
