The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCNS | Home | Cumming School of Medicine | University of Calgary), in partnership with the Department of Community Health Sciences, Department of Radiology, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for a tenure-track (contingent) appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Neurology, within the world renowned Calgary Stroke Program.
The selected candidate will be nominated for a Canada Research Chair Tier II in Global Stroke Equity and Access. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package will be available through the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the Departments and Institutes listed above.
The Tier II Chair will lead a transformative, interdisciplinary research program focused on reducing sex- and gender-based disparities and global inequities in stroke care. The program will encompass robust sex-specific stroke epidemiology; adaptive platform clinical trial design; implementation science targeting rural, remote, and low- and middle-income country settings; and patient-partnered research.
Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. Research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., closures) are recognized as, and may be counted as, an eligible delay (credited at twice the amount of time) beginning March 1, 2020. Key Responsibilities
· Establish and lead an independent, externally funded research program in stroke equity, sex/gender-based disparities in stroke, and/or global stroke health systems
· Design and conduct innovative clinical trials, including adaptive platform trial methodologies, with a focus on underrepresented populations
· Develop and sustain national and international research collaborations relevant to the Chair's mandate
· Provide exceptional clinical care in stroke neurology, including acute stroke coverage at Foothills Medical Centre
· Mentor and train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and residents
· Contribute to the academic teaching mission of DCNS and CSM
· Engage patient partners and equity-deserving communities throughout the research lifecycle
· Contribute to the EDI mission of the department, faculty, and university
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
· MD degree and specialist certification in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent international certification
· Completion of a dedicated clinical stroke fellowship, with demonstrated independent competence across the spectrum of stroke presentations
· Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
· Evidence of an emerging or established independent research program in stroke, health equity, or a closely related area
· Eligibility for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair: within 10 years of completing a PhD or professional degree (or eligible for accommodation of career interruptions; see above)
· Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in research and/or clinical practice
· Research experience or demonstrated interest in sex/gender-based disparities in stroke, global stroke health equity, rural/remote access to stroke care, or innovative clinical trial design (including adaptive or platform trials)
· Demonstrated experience designing or conducting clinical trials (including registry-embedded, adaptive, or platform trials)
· Track record of peer-reviewed publications in the areas outlined above, with recognition that quality, impact, and trajectory of contributions are assessed holistically and in accordance with DORA principles, non-traditional outputs (policy contributions, knowledge translation, patient engagement, open science) are valued
· Evidence of success with competitive peer-reviewed grant funding as Principal Applicant or Co-Applicant from national or international agencies
· Demonstrated commitment to trainee mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Established collaborations with international research groups, global stroke networks, or health systems in low- and middle-income countries
· Expertise in implementation science, knowledge translation, or health services research aimed at improving access to evidence-based stroke care in real-world settings
· Experience with patient-oriented, community-engaged, or participatory research methods, particularly involving underserved populations or persons with lived experience of stroke
· Methodologic expertise relevant to inclusive evidence generation, such as adaptive or platform trial design, registry-embedded RCTs, real-world data, causal inference, or machine learning applied to stroke
· Experience with multi-centre research collaborations, clinical trial networks, or health systems research
This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a vigorous and independent, externally funded research program within a dynamic, collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. The position provides 75% of time protected for research and will include expectations to contribute to teaching (undergraduate and/or graduate) and trainee supervision. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for extramural support from national/provincial agencies to sustain their research program. In addition, the position offers:
