Role
AHS Medical Staff Rules define a Corridor Clinical Department Section Lead (CCDSL) as a Practitioner responsible for the overall function and structure of the Corridor Clinical Department Section and, through the Corridor Clinical Department Lead, for matters within the Corridor Clinical Department Section.
The Corridor Clinical Department Section Lead (CCDSL) is a Practitioner who is a member, or is eligible to be a member of that Corridor Clinical Department Section (CCDS);
South Corridor medical leaders must have a Corridor-wide perspective and an approach to leadership of contributing to the broader vision. Leaders will be supported in, and must subscribe to, leadership development opportunities. The CCDSL collaboratively engages with other Section Leads, Corridor Clinical Department Leads, Hospital Medical Directors, health care providers, and other AHS services for the implementation and delivery of strategies for improved healthcare and safe, quality patient care.
Accountability [Rules 2.9.1]
Corridor Clinical Department Section Leads are appointed by that Section’s Corridor Clinical Department Lead (CCDL) upon the recommendation of a search and selection committee; and are directly accountable to that CCDL.
Responsibility [Rules 2.9.2]
· Utilize assigned Alberta Health Services email address for all administrative matters;
· Recommending Medical Staff Appointments and Clinical Privileges, as well as changes to Appointments and Clinical Privileges within the CCDS;
· Developing policies for the Corridor Clinical Department Section;
· In keeping with the objectives and goals of AHS, assigning duties and responsibilities to members of the Corridor Clinical Section, and to promote and represent the activities of the Corridor Clinical Section;
· Assisting in the development of AHS-wide criteria for procedures new to AHS;
· Promoting educational programs for Corridor Clinical Section members and other staff associated with the Corridor Clinical Section;
· Developing and promoting departmental research activities;
· Ensuring that Corridor Clinical Department policies regarding quality of patient care and safety are developed and implemented;
· Performing Triggered Initial Assessments and Triggered Reviews as delegated by the Corridor Clinical Department Lead pursuant to Part 6 of the Bylaws;
· Acting as a designate for the Corridor Clinical Department Lead for those duties assigned to the Corridor Clinical Department Lead or designate by the Bylaws or these Rules; and
· Other duties as may be delegated by the Corridor Clinical Department Lead.
Other Collaborative Relationships
· External stakeholders including, but not limited to, Alberta Health (AH), Alberta Medical Association (AMA), College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), and Community Leaders.
Duties
1. Operational Leadership
· Establish and maintain effective communication with members of The Section’s Medical Staff, other members of Medical Staff, Facility and Clinical Department leaders, AHS Operational leaders, and others as appropriate;
· Ensure that all members of the Section are aware of their expected compliance with relevant legislation, bylaws, regulations and other applicable policies.
2. Strategy and Quality
· Involvement in the formulation and implementation of policies/pathways/guidelines related to the Section;
· Involvement in and facilitate the involvement of Section physicians in quality assurance initiatives;
· Participation in defining clinical direction and standards of care in the Department;
· Promote best clinical practice and advise CCDL of new developments in medical practice and techniques that may benefit patient care;
· Promote and support continuing education for department members;
· Promote and be involved in initiatives focused on system optimization;
· Assist CCDL and Operational Leads in the Accreditation process.
3. Relationship Management
· Participate in investigation and resolution of complaints involving Department Section members in compliance with AHS bylaws;
· Resolve dispute/conflict within the Department Section in compliance with AHS bylaws
4. People Management
Practitioner Workforce Plan:
· Work collaboratively with Corridor Medical Affairs to maintain the Practitioner Workforce Plan;
· Provide information and projections for recruitment and retention of a sufficient number and appropriate mix of Practitioners with the required skill sets and in the required communities and Sites of Clinical Activity. [Rules 3.2.1 a)]];
Physician Recruitment and Retention:
· Work collaboratively with Corridor Medical Affairs in all phases of physician recruitment and retention, including participation in the review of applicants and their qualifications, site visits, interviews, etc.
Orientation:
· Responsible for the orientation of each new and locum Practitioner to relevant AHS systems and processes and their Sites of Clinical Activity. [Rules 3.7 a)]
Periodic Reviews and Performance Assessments:
· Conduct Periodic Reviews, Probationary Assessments and Performance Management as required.
Triggered Initial Assessment, Triggered Review and Consensual Resolution Process:
· Participate in investigation and resolution of complaints involving Facility Medical Staff members in compliance with AHS Bylaws and Rules with the direction or request of the Zone Medical Director. [Bylaws 6.3 and 6.4]
5. Resource Management
· In conjunction with Zone Medical Affairs and Site/Department Operational Leads review and promote the most effective utilization of resources;
· Assist in the assessment or and prepare a list of new equipment required at the time of budget preparation;
· Assist Corridor Medical Affairs and Operations in planning for future Department/Site needs and development of services;
· Assist Corridor Medical Affairs and Operations in recommending admissions and/or discharges in times of bed shortage, pandemic, disaster, strike, and other unforeseen circumstances.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and have a passion for quality and patient safety. The successful applicant will also be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of the Department Section. |
