AMHSP Position Transplant Infectious Diseases Clinician Researcher, Division of Infectious Diseases

 

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a Clinician Researcher to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.

 

The Division of Infectious Diseases has over 30 Faculty members and provides clinical services to all acute care facilities in Edmonton, and consultative services to Northern Alberta as well as western NWT and parts of BC. There are established specialty programs in Transplant Infectious Diseases, HIV Medicine, Viral Hepatitis, Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship as well as close relationships with Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories, and Public Health. The Division boasts one of the longest running and most highly regarded Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases. It has a long history of conducting clinical trials with dedicated Clinical Trial Unit infrastructure, and members of the Division are actively engaged across clinical, translational and basic science research.

 

The University of Alberta Hospital is home to the second largest multiorgan transplant program in Canada performing heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas/islet and multivisceral transplantation. The Transplant ID service also supports the autologous stem cell and growing CAR-T cell program as well as providing pre and post allogeneic stem cell transplant ID care.

Key accountabilities of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Clinician Researcher will include, but will not be limited to clinical practice of inpatient and outpatient Transplant Infectious Diseases, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees, including Infectious Diseases subspecialty residents and Transplant ID and other Transplant fellows, and the development of an internationally recognized research program in the field of infections in immunocompromised hosts.

Clinical practice (minimum 30% effort) may include, but not be limited to, inpatient transplant ID consultation, ambulatory care and equitable participation in Transplant ID after hours call. Individual areas of clinical interest may be incorporated into the role. The successful applicant will have a major research focus, dedicating at least 40% of their time to research. The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with certification in Infectious Diseases with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and have additional training in clinical transplant infectious diseases. Additional training in clinical or basic/translational research with MSc of PhD or record of research productivity is also required.
