Description:
We are looking for a psychiatrist to join our hospital-based psychiatry team — someone who is interested not only in providing excellent clinical care, but also in being part of a collegial, collaborative and supportive department.
This is an opportunity to develop a varied clinical practice across inpatient psychiatry, ECT and outpatient consultation, while contributing to the ongoing evolution of our services. We are particularly excited about the opportunity to welcome a psychiatrist who will bring their own interests, experience and ideas to our team and help shape where our program goes next.
A varied clinical practice
The successful candidate will contribute to the care of patients across several areas of our service- inpatient care, outpatient care, ECT delivery, and participation on the on-call roster.
Inpatient Psychiatry
You will provide assessment and ongoing care to patients admitted to our inpatient psychiatry unit, working closely with nurses, allied health professionals, trainees, families and community partners. We value a thoughtful, collaborative approach to clinical care and believe that excellent inpatient psychiatry depends on strong relationships across the entire team.
Inpatient bed numbers will likely fluctuate throughout the year depending on the number of over-capacity beds being opened and closed however, at minimum you will have a 2-4 beds.
ECT
You will participate in our ECT roster, working alongside colleagues in anesthesia, nursing, and fellow psychiatrists. Typically you will deliver ECT 2 times per month with patient numbers ranging from 2-11, both inpatient and outpatient recipients.
Outpatient Psychiatry
You will provide psychiatric consultation to patients referred through our central intake service, offering diagnostic assessment, treatment recommendations and consultation to referring providers. There will also be opportunities to participate in group therapy- namely DBT groups currently being delivered by DBT trained and certified psychiatrists.
There is also an exciting opportunity to help shape and further develop our outpatient program. Our outpatient service is evolving, and we are interested in what it could become. We welcome a psychiatrist who enjoys thinking creatively about service delivery and would like to work with our existing outpatient team to identify opportunities, develop new approaches and build services that respond to the needs of our patients and community.
There is no expectation that you arrive with a predetermined blueprint. Rather, we are looking for someone who is interested in building something together.
CALL
Our group participates in the Physician On-Call Program offered via Alberta Health. You will participate in the on-call schedule which works out to approximately 2-3 calls per month (1700-0800 M-F; 0800-0800 Saturday, Sunday, Stat Holidays).
Teaching is part of who we are
We are a teaching service and take pride in the role we play in educating the next generation of physicians and psychiatrists.
Our psychiatrists work with medical students and psychiatry residents in clinical settings, providing supervision, teaching, mentorship and role modelling. We value the contribution that learners make to our clinical environment and strive to create a culture in which they feel supported, challenged and welcomed.
For physicians who enjoy teaching, there are opportunities to become involved in both informal bedside teaching and broader educational activities.
You will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta through processes in place via the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
We care about how we work together
Perhaps most importantly, we are looking for someone who values being a good colleague.
Our department places a high value on collegiality, collaboration, mutual respect and supporting one another. We believe that a strong psychiatric service is built not only on clinical expertise, but also on the relationships between the people who work within it.
We want our psychiatrists to feel comfortable asking for advice, sharing ideas, seeking a second opinion, and supporting one another when clinical work is challenging. We value different perspectives and recognize that our service is stronger when people contribute their experience and expertise.
We are looking for someone who will contribute to — and benefit from — this culture.
We want you to succeed here
Joining a new hospital can be a significant transition, whether you are early in your career or an experienced psychiatrist coming from another practice environment.
We are committed to making that transition a positive one.
New colleagues will be supported as they become familiar with our hospital, clinical systems, and the logistics around billing. We are happy to provide mentorship and informal support, and to help physicians identify opportunities that align with their professional interests and longer-term career goals.
Whether you are looking to establish yourself as a new psychiatrist, expand an established clinical practice, develop expertise in a particular area, become more involved in teaching, or contribute to service development, we want to work with you to help make the role fit your career.
Who might thrive in this role?
We welcome psychiatrists at different stages of their careers. You may be an early-career psychiatrist looking for a supportive environment in which to establish your practice, or an experienced psychiatrist looking for a new professional home and an opportunity to contribute in different ways.
You may have a particular interest in inpatient psychiatry, ECT, outpatient consultation, medical education or program development. Or you may simply be looking for a place where you can practice excellent psychiatry alongside people who genuinely enjoy working together.
What matters most to us is that you are curious, collaborative, thoughtful and committed to patient care — and that you are interested in being part of a team.
Come help us build what comes next
This is more than an opportunity to fill an existing position.
It is an opportunity to join an established clinical team, contribute your expertise, develop your own practice, teach and mentor learners, and have a meaningful voice in the future direction of our services.
We have a strong foundation. We are looking for someone who wants to help us build on it.
