Job Summary:

Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for the role of Medical Lead, Virtual Health, and Cancer Screening Program, Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC).

 

The Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness aligns the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada to provide the framework for this position.

 

This position will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of cancer screening protocols within the Alberta Indigenous Virtual Care Clinic (AIVCC), ensuring culturally sensitive and equitable care for all patients. The role involves close collaboration with internal teams (nurses, patient navigators, management) and external stakeholders (AHS Cancer Screening, ISC Cancer Initiatives, oncologists). This role will also play a critical role in guiding research initiatives and presenting findings to improve cancer screening rates in underserved populations. This will be a valuable addition to the clinic to support Indigenous Peoples across Alberta who do not currently have a local physician.

 

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  • Develop, refine, and implement cancer screening protocols (breast, colorectal, cervical cancer);
  • Work with the clinic management to hire staff and oversee the screening process;
  • Supervise and provide guidance to a team of 3 Registered Nurses (RNs) responsible for cancer screening;
  • Ensure that all cancer screening activities are aligned with clinical best practices and cultural safety standards;
  • Follow clinic policies and direction to reduce barriers for Indigenous patients;
  • Provide a culturally safe experience  for patients;
  • Collaborate with primary care physicians and specialists to enhance patient referrals and care coordination;
  • Partner with external stakeholders, including AHS Cancer Screening, oncology treatment teams, and ISC Cancer Initiatives, to optimize resources and patient outcomes;
  • Engage with elders, community leaders, and patient navigators to support outreach efforts to underserved and diverse populations
  • Foster partnerships with research institutions to evaluate the effectiveness of screening programs;
  • Regularly review and analyze data related to patient screenings, outcomes, and program efficacy;
  • Develop data-driven reports and presentations on screening outcomes for internal and external audiences;
  • Develop and source culturally sensitive education materials for patients and communities;
  • Ensure that all educational content promotes empowerment, equity of care, and informed decision-making for patients;
  • Lead patient and community outreach initiatives to increase awareness and participation in cancer screening.

  

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have worked in Indigenous communities or with Indigenous Peoples. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with the ability to build relationships, trust, and collaboration between AHS and Indigenous communities and have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, and a passion for quality and patient safety. The ideal candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, an ability to mentor other Indigenous and non-Indigenous physicians and be able to relate and engage with Indigenous leadership and Indigenous organizations.

 

Candidates must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff.

 

Remuneration:

Within the CMLb level of the AHS Medical Leadership Compensation Grid and in accordance with CMO Policy 01-01.
