    The Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone and the University of Calgary invite applications for 2 Ophthalmologists – Cornea Specialist. Qualifications include an MD, certification by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Ophthalmology or equivalent, with a minimum one year accredited cornea and external disease fellowship. Special interest and training in pediatric cornea would be an asset. Leadership and educational experience is considered an asset.  Applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

    The successful candidate will be expected to commit to cornea clinical and surgical care for the adult and pediatric population. Calgary’s cornea team currently provides services to all of Alberta in both tertiary and quaternary care. The candidate will be expected to provide care to complex cornea patients both medically and surgically, including various corneal transplant techniques.  There is an expectation to collaborate and support the current cornea team for patient care.

    There will be access to operating time at the chartered surgical facilities according to section policy. There will be an obligation to commit to clinics at the Rockyview Eye Clinic or the Alberta Children’s Hospital. There will be access to operating time at Alberta Children’s Hospital for pediatric cases on a catch and release basis. There will be access to operating time at the Rockyview General Hospital on a catch and release basis. The successful candidate will receive a cataract allocation according to section policy. They will also be required to participate in the general ophthalmology on-call group in accordance with the Section of Ophthalmology

    The candidate will be expected to participate in medical student, resident and fellowship teaching including direct clinical and surgical teaching and didactic lectures. There is an expectation for academic contributions in the form of research, education and administration. The candidate will be expected to collaborate and support the Lions Eye Bank. Contributions to departmental committee work and undertaking administrative responsibilities will be required.

    The successful candidate will become a member of the Section of Ophthalmology. The candidate will be expected to apply for a clinical appointment with the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Surgery.

Qualifications:

Qualifications include an MD, a fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Ophthalmology. Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in Alberta. The successful candidate must have demonstrated specific proficiency in all aspects of cataract surgery (with and without intraocular lenses).

The successful candidate will have previously demonstrated leadership skills in an academic environment and shown an interest in teaching and clinical research. Additional training in the areas of either medical education or clinical epidemiology is considered an asset.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
