Recovery Alberta invites applications for the role of Clinical Medical Director, Concurrent Disorder Unit (CDU) at the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) in Calgary, Alberta.

Approved in November 2025, the new CDU will provide inpatient care to individuals presenting with severe and persistent mental illness and severe substance use disorders. The goal of the CDU is to provide concurrent disorder treatment to individuals so that they may pursue recovery.

Physician leadership is central to driving high-performing, patient-centered health systems. This role blends clinical expertise with strategic oversight, ensuring that medical decisions, operational priorities, and organizational goals are aligned. An effective physician leader shapes culture, fosters accountability, advances quality and safety, and supports teams through evidence-informed decision-making. They build strong relationships across clinical, operational, administrative, and community partners; champion innovation; and guide systems through complexity and change. This position, working directly with operational counterparts, requires exceptional communication, sound judgment, and the ability to translate clinical insight into sustainable policy, operational planning, and workforce strategies that improve outcomes and strengthen organizational performance.

The Clinic Medical Director is accountable for the planning, implementation, and delivery of the services at the CDU. This role involves:

  • Direct supervision of the medical team
  • Providing operational medical leadership to provide excellence in professional practice and enable quality, patient and family-centered care
  • Ensuring adherence to protocols, healthcare regulations and standards
  • Ensuring high-quality, safe, innovative and evidence-informed standards of care that achieve positive health outcomes
  • Designing and implementing efficiencies, developing best practices and establishing standards of practice for the CDU
  • Working closely with the interdisciplinary team, psychiatrists and community partners in support of effective professional and collaborative practice.
  • Managing on site scheduling to ensure continuity of care along with helping to create a local, robust virtual on call service that can be expanded across the province 
  • Contributing to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the CDU and additional Addiction Services
  • Identifying and addressing gaps in clinical practice as well as escalating learnings to address system level gaps.
     

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of addiction medicine to effectively manage the complexities of addiction services and treatment. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with experience in medical leadership and be considered a strong clinician by peers.

The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalence.

The successful applicant will preferably be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Psychiatry.

In addition, the successful applicant shall:

·        Have experience in provision of treatment of concurrent addiction and mental health.

·        Have evidence of formal administrative experience, education, and/or training.

·        Obtain and maintain a Recovery Alberta Medical Staff Appointment.

Reporting Relationship: 
The practitioner will report to the Provincial Medical Director, Concurrent Disorders, Addiction Services.

Term: 
Start March 1, 2026

Additional Information:
This position is 0.1 FTE.
Remuneration is in accordance with CMO Policy for contracted medical leadership positions.
