The successful candidate will join the Section of Neurosurgery at the University of Calgary. The position will be based at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to provide exceptional clinical care focused on pediatric spinal deformity surgery and to participate in acute care coverage for pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric spinal pathology.
The candidate will collaborate with an orthopedic surgeon similarly focused on pediatric spine surgery and will function in a multidisciplinary setting which includes engagement of physical medicine and rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work and orthotics. They will also be supported by the pediatric neurosurgery program which includes three additional neurosurgeons and the University of Calgary spine program, which includes four neurosurgeons, and six orthopedic surgeons focused on spine surgery with diverse interests spanning a large spectrum of subspecialty interests in the field.
The ideal candidate will dedicate 70% of their time to clinical work but protected time for academic activity can be negotiated depending on the candidate’s track record and academic plan. This position will be a major clinical appointment at the University of Calgary. Conversion to a GFT appointment can be a consideration in the future. Start-up funding commensurate with an appropriately developed academic plan can be considered. The candidate will also be expected to participate in teaching medical students, residents, clinical and research fellows, and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to start their position between July 1, 2025 and September 30, 2025 (negotiable).
Qualifications:
Required qualifications include an MD and Canadian Royal College specialist certification in Neurosurgery. The candidate must have a dedicated clinical fellowship in pediatric spine surgery in which a significant and demonstrable amount of pediatric deformity spine surgery (including early-onset, congenital, neuromuscular, and idiopathic scoliosis)was included and led to independent competence with the spectrum of disease presentation (may be expected or in progress but complete before commencing). The candidate must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. A strong track record of scholarly activity, with 6 or more peer-reviewed publications, is desired in the preferred candidate.
